Since 1991, Brighton Park Dental has seen numerous patients who require the removal of their wisdom teeth. These latecomers not only cause pain but also increase the risk of infections and overcrowding. If you are considering wisdom teeth removal in Chicago, Illinois, we want you to be well-informed before your big day. After extraction, many people are worried about recovery, but the following tips will help you heal faster and more comfortably.
Bleeding is normal after your wisdom tooth extraction. Your dentist will place a gauze pad on the extraction site to control bleeding. Bite on it as directed and change it as soon as it soaks. A gauze pad not only helps manage bleeding but also encourages blood to clot faster.Â
Rest is the best medicine after surgery. Take a few days off work and plan to sleep for at least 8 hours each day. Keep your head slightly elevated while resting to help minimize swelling. Also, keep off strenuous activities during recovery. That means avoid lifting heavy weights and rigorous workouts. If you feel the need to move, consider taking a stroll around the neighborhood.
Applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek helps manage swelling and soreness. Use ice for about 15–20 minutes at a time, with short breaks in between, during the first 24-48 hours after surgery. This can significantly reduce inflammation and discomfort.
Your dentist will typically prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to ensure a smooth recovery. Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed by your dentist. Staying ahead of discomfort, especially in the first 24–48 hours, can make recovery much more manageable. However, avoid taking more than recommended, and don’t mix medications unless advised.

Maintaining proper oral hygiene is crucial, but it’s important to be gentle. For the initial few days, refrain from brushing directly on the surgical site. Rinse your mouth with warm, salty water to remove unwanted bacteria. However, be gentle when rinsing to avoid dislodging the clot. Good oral hygiene helps prevent infections and promotes proper healing.
This is your chance to enjoy ice cream as a meal. However, if possible, consider broths or smoothies to provide your body with the best nutrients, which can help you heal faster. Other soft foods you can consider include yogurt, mashed potatoes, Jell-O, soup, and scrambled eggs. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or hard foods that could irritate the area or get stuck in the sockets. Gradually return to your regular diet as healing progresses.
When taking liquids, avoid using straws, as they create suction that could dislodge the blood clot. This can lead to dry socket, a painful condition that can complicate healing. You can drink whatever you want, but use a spoon or drink straight from the cup.
Complications during recovery are rare, but please reach out to your dentist immediately if you notice anything unusual. Warning signs include fever, increased pain, or relentless bleeding and swelling. The sooner you reach out, the faster we can provide effective remedies.
