What do dental implants treat?

Dental implants replace teeth that either fall out or are extracted due to severe decay, gum disease, injuries, or other types of trauma. They also prevent or stop the destructive effects of bone loss.

What do you mean by “bone loss”?

When you lose your teeth, you also lose the bone in your jaw. This can cause your face to age considerably due to the lack of bone structure to support facial tissues. It can also worsen functional problems with chewing, speech, and more. This process happens because your jawbone does not have the stimulation it needs to stay strong and healthy from the teeth and their functions. Think of what happens to your muscles after a long period of inactivity. They shrink. The same thing can happen to your jawbone.

How do implants prevent or stop this process?

Implants are made differently from either type of tooth replacement, such as dental bridges or dentures. The implant itself replaces the tooth’s root. It is surgically applied to the jawbone where your tooth used to be, and over the next several months, the bone grows naturally with the implant. This provides a solid foundation for the replacement tooth (or dental crown), which is later attached to it. There are many benefits associated with a design that imitates the structure of natural teeth, and one of those benefits is the ability to keep the jawbone strong and to avoid complications related to deteriorated bone.

What are the other benefits?

The more that we can imitate the natural tooth, the better. This ensures a natural appearance, a pleasant feel in the mouth, and a healthy function. Since the bone stays strong, you can enjoy your new teeth for years – even a lifetime – with good oral hygiene. Implants also present a conservative option. Unlike traditional bridges, we do not need to reduce the size of the neighboring teeth to anchor the dental bridge in place. The teeth are “anchored” instead by the artificial tooth root (implant) secured in the jawbone.

What if I need to replace more than one tooth?

No problem! We can place additional implants in the jaw, whatever you need. It’s not necessary to connect an implant to every replacement tooth. We can use a few implants to support a dental bridge or as few as four to six implants to support an upper or lower denture.

Why are you a “full-service” implant dentist?

Other dental offices in southwest Chicago, IL, and beyond do not have the training and technologies to position the implants in the jawbone surgically. These dentists must refer their patients to specialists or other offices. They would then restore the implant later with a crown, bridge, or denture. At Brighton Park Dental, our dentists have undergone advanced training to offer you all the services necessary to complete the implant process, including surgical placement. This makes for the most hassle-free, cost-effective journey to rebuilding your smile and restoring your health and well-being. Call (773) 801-5171 to schedule your implant consultation today.
